100 YEARS OF BATTERY POWER

05 May 2026

SPONSORED CONTENT: U.S. Battery’s 100th anniversary highlights its long-term role in providing efficient, cost-effective battery power, adapting to decades of advancements in access lifts, cranes, forklifts, and other rental equipment.

U.S. Battery was founded in 1926 and had a long history before battery industry entrepreneurs, John Anderson and Cliff Richards, acquired the company in 1972. By then, the company began focusing on deep-cycle products, coinciding with the emergence of battery-powered scissor lifts in the 1940s and ‘50s.

As the use of battery-powered equipment became more prominent in the 1970s and 80’s, U.S. Battery expanded its operations in 1987 with a new plant in Evans, Georgia. In 1989, Anderson bought out his partner, Cliff Richards, and became the sole owner, while a new facility was built in Corona, California.

Technologies For Changing Demands

Battery-powered equipment began expanding, and U.S. Battery responded by improving Flooded Lead-Acid (FLA) batteries to achieve greater cycle life and longer overall service life, using a proprietary cell plate design, finer lead grains, and reduced plate grid corrosion.

As compact-sized rental equipment emerged with less accessible battery compartments, the rental industry wanted zero-maintenance power. U.S. Battery responded with premium Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries that feature enhanced resistance to positive electrode corrosion and integrated carbon-enhanced negative active materials. This resulted in faster, more reliable charging, with zero maintenance and near 100% recyclability, similar to FLA batteries.

To support its global growth, U.S. Battery built a third manufacturing plant in Augusta, Georgia, and added an in-house Oxide Mill in 2028.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERY INNOVATIONS

By 2010, the demand was for improved safety standards and more power from a single battery charge. Lithium-ion batteries became the answer. U.S. Battery meticulously researched components to meet the company’s safety and reliability standards, and in 2022, it proudly launched the Essential Li® line. This featured premium performance, including Large Prismatic LFP cells instead of standard cylindrical cells, for superior energy delivery. Laser-welded connections, rather than basic spot welding, provided exceptional resistance to shock and vibration, as well as an IP67 rating for ultimate protection against dust and moisture.

U.S. Battery’s Essential Li® 24V and 48V batteries have also earned UL 2271, UL 2580, and UL 38.3 certifications for safety, quality, and transport compliance. In 2025, U.S. Battery integrated heating elements into select Essential Li® models, ensuring optimal charge efficiencies in colder climates.

Continuing the Commitment

The company’s commitment to improving its products has put it at the top for rental companies seeking reliability, cost-effectiveness, recyclability, and long run times. Visit www.usbattery.com to learn more.
