Hamm offers ‘Brake Assist’ on tandem rollers

Hamm is offering a new Brake Assist system on its HX tandem rollers that automatically detects potential collision risks and will slow or stop the machine.

It will “actively help to defuse critical situations and improve safety on construction sites”, said the manufacturer. Availability on other Hamm products will follow.

The new assistance system uses LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors that scan the surroundings, detecting people, objects or other obstacles.

If an obstacle approaches the defined danger zone, the system automatically initiates a three-stage controlled braking manoeuvre.

First, the machine’s speed is reduced. If the obstacle remains in the danger zone or gets closer, it will stop the machine. If there is an emergency situation, the system initiates an immediate stop.

Multiple parameters assessed

Brake Assist analyses parameters including direction of travel, current speed, working width, track offset and steering angle, combining that with object detection information.

Hamm said this approach “goes beyond traditional warning systems. Instead of simply flagging up hazards, the system actively helps to defuse critical situations and improve safety on construction sites.”

It added; “The operator remains involved in the work process at all times, but is provided with an additional layer of safety for situations in which people, vehicles or obstacles unexpectedly enter the working area.

“Thanks to the system’s active intervention, collisions can be prevented or their consequences significantly minimised.”

Hamm said the system is designed to not interfere with the operator’s normal working routine.

The OEM said asphalt projects were particularly challenging environments, with machinery moving in confined spaces, with multiple surveying, testing and operating staff in the same working area.
