The Global Rental Alliance's (GRA) professional exchange programme is up and running with the first participant, Peter Maginnis, a branch manager with American Rentals in California, now gaining experience of the Australian rental market with Kennards Hire in Sydney.

This first exchange has been organised by one of GRA's members, the American Rental Association. The alliance hopes that the exchange scheme between rental companies worldwide will "advance careers in rental and increase worldwide awareness of the equipment rental industry."

Mr Maginnis, who began his exchange at Kennards Hire in early November, is learning the day-to-day operations of the rental business in Australia while sharing his US perspectives. He will return after January to share his Australian experiences during The Rental Show in Atlanta in March.

Meanwhile, the American is chronicling his observations and work in Australia on a blog, which can be accessed at www.globalrentalalliance.com.

Additional exchanges are planned for later in 2009.

The idea for the international exchange grew from a conversation between Kennard executives Andy Kennard and Peter Lancken and former ARA chairman, Carl Newman. The three recognised the value of friendships formed with ARA members over the years. Mr Kennard and Mr Lancken later donated AUS$10000 to the ARA Foundation in 2007 on behalf of Kennards to help fund the exchange program.

The Global Rental Alliance comprises the American Rental Association, Canadian Rental Association, DLR of France, European Rental Association, Hire Association Europe, Hire Industry Association of New Zealand, and Hire and Rental Industry Association Ltd [of Australia].

The ARA Foundation, established in 1976, strengthens the industry through a scholarship programme, the Rental Executive Advisory Program, a rental industry disaster relief programme and the new international exchange programme.
