Born in 1973 in County Kildare, Ciarán Ryan had a long and successful business in the field of mobile screening and crushing, becoming a well-known and respected figure globally.
Raised and educated in Athlone, Ciarán excelled both academically and on the Gaelic football pitch. This led him to the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, where he studied business and marketing with a specialism in German, becoming fluent in the latter.
After graduation, Ciarán joined Extec Screens and Crushers, initially as an area sales manager in Germany, where he was able to put to effective use his business training and language skills.
He then relocated first to the UK, and then to Ireland, where he joined a relatively new entrant in the industry, Erin Systems Ltd.
Initially appointed as the company’s sales manager, Erin experienced tremendous growth, introducing the Erin Finger Screen, with Ciarán becoming managing director at a relatively early age.
Following this success, Ciarán decided to change career and became a commercial helicopter pilot in South Africa. However, mobile crushing and screening was in his blood, and in 2008, he joined Fintec as a global export sales manager.
Following the company’s acquisition by Sandvik Mining and Construction, Ciarán was appointed the Swedish company’s sales manager for Australia, New Zealand and South Africa for its mobile crushing and screening business unit, boosting sales by over 200% in the region. He became OEM business manager in 2011 before being made responsible for sales in northern Europe.
The restraints of a large multi-national corporation however proved unsatisfactory. This led to the founding of Screencore Ltd alongside director James McGrath and Martin Maye. Here Ciarán was able to utilise his business acumen and industry experience.
Screencore soon found its niche in the global market providing high-quality mobile crushing and screening solutions manufactured in Dungannon in Northern Ireland.
Despite being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, Ciarán continued with helping Screencore develop until illness made such work impossible.
As well as his business career, Ciarán was a keen sportsman, playing Gaelic Football – GAA – at county level. In addition, Ciarán enjoyed most sports, proving adept at running, and his real passion, golf.
Ciarán achieved a great deal in his relatively short lifetime and impacted for the good on numerous people throughout the world. He will be sadly missed by all those who had the good fortune to know him, said Screencore in its announcement.
Ciarán leaves behind his loving wife Bairbre, children Alice, Louis and Iris, as well as his parents Rita and Dermond, siblings Donal, Aiden and Aoife, as well as an extended family and friends.
The funeral was held on 15 October 2026 at St. Brigid’s Church Straffan, County Kildare, Irish Republic.
The family welcomes donations to Cancer Trials Ireland in memory of Ciarán in order to continue the fight against this most unforgiving of illnesses.
