Rotair approves HVO for portable compressors

Italian compressor manufacturer Rotair has approved the use of EN15940 compliant Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils (HVOs) as a fossil-free alternative to power its portable compressors.

The MDVN Eco5 and MDVS Eco5 portable compressor range will now be available with a HVO powered Kohler engine, which complies with EU Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) Stage V emission standards.

Usually powered by diesel, the MDVN and MDVS portable compressors are designed for standard applications but also with sandblasting, fibre optic cable laying and other applications requiring cool, dry air.

Rotair say the compressors address customers’ needs for higher flow performance, reliability and lower lifecycle cost. In addition to running on HVO, the compressors can also run with mixed-fuels.

According to Kohler, HVO is a renewable paraffinic fuel that is produced with plant or animal oils derived from the residues of the meat and fish industries.

Also known as “synthetic diesel” and “renewable diesel”, the alternative fuel is said to produce less CO2 emissions and particulate matter pollution from the engine without impacting performance.

Alex Persyn, director of product management at Rotair said, “Meeting critical sustainability challenges, including the reduction in emissions and improvement in air quality, are common objectives as we seek to combat climate change.

“The validated use of HVO in our units gives our customers more options for improving the sustainability of their operations while maintaining compressor performance and efficiency – a win-win solution.”

Although the range is designed specifically for the European market, the company say the compressors can be used globally.

Rotair say many small regional rentals are already renting the units in the UK and elsewhere, and they will be on the Rotair stand at the International Rental Exhibition in Maastricht, next June.
