Podcast: Nixon Hire on its ‘golden triangle’ of sustainable products

UK-based rental company Nixon Hire has told IRN that “the business feels far more aligned” following its decision to divest its general plant operations and focus on becoming a specialist in sustainable equipment and products.

Speaking at the UK’s recent Plantworx exhibition in Newark, Simon Gibbs, head of renewable power at Nixon Hire, said the company had moved from being a product-based provider to a project-based partner, as customers increasingly aim to reduce their carbon footprint.

Gibbs described the company’s new offering as “the golden triangle,” comprising site accommodation, welfare units and renewable power. He added that sustainability is now firmly on “everyone’s agenda.”

“Customer demand, and certainly customer focus, has markedly changed over the last three years,” said Gibbs.

“Three years ago, I would suggest that it was a challenge. There were certain customers that hadn’t bought into the sustainable elements of their sites. I think that has almost become the norm now — people are looking at that from the offset rather than as a potential additional benefit.”

The company is also trialling a hybrid solar-wind turbine frame. At the show, it exhibited a 32ft model designed to deliver continuous clean power through solar panels and wind turbines, supported by integrated battery storage.

Gibbs said Nixon Hire is “constantly investigating new products that sit within our ethos of providing sustainable sites.”

He confirmed that trials of the hybrid system have been successful so far, though further testing is planned before any fleet investment.
