Doka creates AI tool to count scaffold and formwork components
10 June 2025

Doka has developed an AI tool to automate the counting and identification of formwork and scaffolding components, with the technology now being used at more than 50 Doka locations worldwide.
The process replaces the traditional - and time-consuming - task of manual counting of returned rental materials.
The ‘AI Counting & Identification’ tool, created by Doka and supported by Microsoft technology, uses a mobile device to take a photo of materials, with the AI system then suggesting a count. Once confirmed, it records the result along with the image, creating a reliable digital record.
More than 20 Doka product categories are already supported by the system, including scaffolding components, beams, props and Framax panels.
Doka said the system has been used more than 10,000 times, counting over one million items, and with an accuracy rate above 98%. It said the system has been designed for use in construction environments and will recognize even dirty or heavily used rental items and “offers a clear advantage over RFID-based systems or off-the-shelf counting apps.”
Robert Hauser, CEO of Doka, said the technology was helping it process returns faster, get equipment ready for use more quickly, and plan inventory more accurately. In addition, “AI allows us to establish an objective and traceable process that also improves communication. That builds trust with our customers”.
Potential use on major projects
The system is currently used internally at Doka yards, but the company sees potential for future use directly on construction sites. Live demos and early feedback from Bauma highlighted that the service could add value especially on large-scale projects where there is a high material turnover, said the company.
AI is also being used by Doka as an internal forecasting tool that uses data to predict when and how much rental material will return from a site. This allows for more precise stock management and helps avoid shortages.
Doka is meanwhile planning the phased launch in July of its new Doka 360 customer platform, which will connect every stage of the formwork process, from planning and ordering to delivery and return.
Real-time data from sensors embedded in formwork or concrete will flow directly into the system, giving customers visibility and helping them make informed decisions. The launch will see selected customers in Germany and the USA given exclusive early access to the platform.
