Xpanner launches excavator-based solar panel installer

Construction automation specialist Xpanner has launched an excavator-based system designed to automate parts of the solar panel installation process.

The company said its X1 Panel Lift system can transport PV panel boxes, pick panels directly from them, and lift and place panels using a single excavator.

Xpanner said the system expands its X1 platform, which has previously been deployed on pile drivers for solar piling applications.

The company said the new panel lift system is intended to reduce the need for separate feeder equipment, such as compact track loaders or forklifts, while also cutting the amount of manual lifting required from installation crews.

Utility-scale solar projects can involve the repeated movement and placement of thousands of panels, often across uneven terrain.

Xpanner said the X1 Panel Lift automates repetitive panel handling while leaving the operator in control through a remote interface.

The system uses automated vacuum handling, assisted panel positioning and what Xpanner calls Precision Align Assist to support consistent panel placement.

The company said the automated workflow guides the operator through pick-up, lifting, placement and pre-release using a visual interface and audible and visual cues.

Henri Lee, co-founder and chief executive officer of Xpanner, said, “Solar installation has long been held back by its dependence on large skilled crews and complex equipment setups.

“Our solution changes that equation entirely, and now handles not just solar piling, but panel lifting as well. One machine, one button, one workflow, any operator can run it from day one.”

Xpanner said the system is powered a proprietary automation controller, which is designed to control hydraulic, electric and mechanical systems in real time.

The system uses lidar, vision and GNSS sensors to build a live 3D model of the jobsite and support panel handling in changing field conditions.

Xpanner said the automation software and sensing equipment sit on top of a standard excavator, allowing the company to extend the same architecture to other jobsite workflows over time.

The X1 Panel Lift is available through an all-inclusive subscription covering hardware, the X1 kit and licence, Xpanner Connect software, and on-site field operations support.
