Volvo Group plans energy park at battery factory site

In 2022, Volvo Group announced it had started work on a large-scale battery factory in Mariestad, Sweden, to support expansion of its battery-electric heavy-duty vehicles and machines. Production is expected to begin after 2030.

The next step announced in the Mariestad expansion process is an energy park near the intended battery cell production site. The energy park will include a large-scale battery storage facility that will support grid stability in the region, and a future test bed to enable the development and testing of new energy solutions.

Initially, the park is expected to provide approximately 70 MW/260 MWh of battery storage capacity. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) from Volvo Energy will be utilized.

The energy park is expected to become operational during 2027. Volvo Group said it will provide flexibility and stability to the regional energy market, including through flexibility services, meaning that the stored energy can flow back into the local grid and provide power when needed.

“This initiative is a natural next step in the development of our Mariestad facility and reflects our vision of a more robust, flexible and sustainable energy system,” said Lars Stenqvist, responsible for the development of Mariestad site at Volvo Group. “The energy park in Mariestad – that will be one of the largest in Sweden with some 70 MW/260 MWh of battery storage – will support Volvo Group’s and Sweden’s decarbonization ambitions. It will also be a great test bed for testing and further advance energy solutions for our customers.”
