Tech chief to reveal secrets of Neom’s Trojena project at Texas event on March 19

Neom’s Paul Surin will speak at next month’s Construction Technology Summit in Austin, Texas on March 19.

The event, taking place at the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center, will also include presentations on autonomy and AI, BIM, telematics and laser scanning, as well as a fascinating look at how digital technology is aiding the construction of renewables projects and even the ITER experimental nuclear fusion reactor.

Surin, the head of digital & IT at Neom’s Trojena project in Saudi Arabia, will describe some of the cutting-edge technology being brought to bear on the Trojena project, a unique ski and leisure resort being developed in the mountains of Saudi Arabia.

The notion of skiing in a country with an arid or desert climate seems far-fetched, but the developer says temperatures in the mountains regularly fall below 0 degrees Celsius in the winter, allowing for the creation of snow from desalinated water.

Neom plans to construct 36km of ski slopes, plus 42,000m2 of retail and dining space, more than 100 indoor and outdoor activities and a 3,000-seat mountainside amphitheatre, all within a 60km2 masterplan.

Surin says the resort will be a world-class year-round destination, with sustainable tourism at its heart. Plans for the development of Trojena include the utilisation of numerous sustainable technologies, including water recirculation, solar and wind power.

As part of his role, Surin is heading up Trojena’s digital twin initiative, merging assets, processes and systems for improved decision making.

He is also building a robust data ecosystem, focusing on governance and the use of data for predictive analytics.

In his presentation, Surin will describe the complexities and opportunities presented by data and digital twins, as well as the value of technologies such as AI, blockchain, and Industry 4.0 for the future of large construction projects.
