Select Plant Australia and its contractor owner Laing O’Rourke said it will target a 40% reduction in diesel consumption on all its projects in the country located in off-grid locations.

The initiative will see it using hybrid generators – battery packs combined with combustion engines – to cut emissions by a minimum of 40%, with a commitment to cutting diesel use by 75% using battery and solar products.

For the past two years the company, which is the Australian sister-business to UK-based Select Plant, has been integrating hybrid and solar-powered products on Laing O’Rourke projects.

The company has added ten hybrid generators and various solar technologies to its fleet.

Nathan Mitschuinig, Select Business Unit Leader in Australia, said; “We know these new standards are possible because we have seen significant emission reductions from using solar power for our off-grid sites in Western Australia and Victoria.

“Select is committed to reaching this new standard to achieve operational net zero by 2030.”

Select said the initiative is expected to save a minimum of 500,000 litres of diesel annually, translating into A$1.4 million in cost savings and reducing carbon emissions by 1,300 tonnes.
