US oil and gas service company ProPetro said its recently created power services division, ProPWR, has agreed to buy up to 2.1GW of power generation equipment from Caterpillar as it scales up to meet the demands for power for data centres, oil and gas, and industrial customers.

Under the agreement ProPWR will buy at least 1.5GW of gas turbine power assets and up to 2.1GW in total over the next five years. The division previously ordered 550MW of capacity and said it would have approximately 2.6GW in its fleet by the end of 2031, and fully deployed by 2032.

ProPWR was created by Texas-based ProPetro at the end of 2024 to provide portable power capacity in support of its own fracking services business and to provide power for other customers, including data centres.

ProPetro is rapidly expanding the division. In a recent investor presentation, it said it would have between 475MW and 525MW of power deployed by the end of 2027, rising to as much as 725MW in 2028 and 875MW in 2029.

First units deployed

Its first power units were installed in the third quarter of 2025 and it expects data centre and industrial power business to represent a “higher share” of its business in the future.

Sam Sledge, ProPetro’s chief executive officer, said the agreement would leverage the global reputation of Caterpillar; “This collaboration will be a key enabler in achieving ProPWR’s long-term objectives and sustaining our rapid growth trajectory.”

Travis Simmering, president of ProPWR, said the deal was “a major milestone in the expansion of our strategic collaboration with Caterpillar, reinforcing our position as a leader in high-efficiency power-as-a-service solutions.”

Tara Rossman, senior vice president of Caterpillar Oil & Gas and Marine, added; “As demand from data centres and other energy intensive applications continue to accelerate, Caterpillar is committed to supporting PROPWR with proven power generation technologies and the global scale needed to execute over the long term.”
