US manufacturer Multiquip has started shipping four Tier 4i compliant gensets in the 150-300 Kva power sizes.

The new MQ Power models - the DCA150SSC (150 kVA), DCA180SSC (180 kVA), DCA220SSC (220 kVA) and DCA300SSC (300 kVA) - are equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to trap particulate matter, or soot, from the engine exhaust.

"With the DPF, the new units produce zero grams per brake horsepower-hour (gr/bhp-hr)", said Torsten Erbel, vice president product management, engineering and customer support for Multiquip, "This is a significant improvement when compared to previous models that produced between 0.07 to 0.015 gr/bhp-hr".

The particulate filters have a self-cleaning design, with an automatic or manually triggered regeneration process used to burn off accumulated soot once it reaches a factory set limit.

The manual option allows the operator to select the best time to begin regeneration. Visual indicators and diagnostic troubleshooting are provided in the control panel to alert the operator.

In the US, portable rental generator sets are required to meet Tier 4i emissions limits. However, in Europe, constant speed engines - including rental gensets - have to meet less onerous Stage IIIA limits from 1 January 2011 or 2012, depending on the power rating.

Stage IIIA limits can be met without the more sophisticate after-treatment required for Stage IIIB (Europe) or Tier 4i (US) regulations.
