The first International Rental Conference in Beijing, China on 14 October will provide a real insight into the developing Asian and Chinese rental market and offer rental management advice from some of the top names in the industry. Murray Pollok reports.

If you want to learn about rental market opportunities in Asia and China, and are interested in learning from some of the largest rental companies in the world, then the inaugural International Rental Conference (IRC) is the perfect event.

With speakers from United Rentals, Loxam, Volvo Rents and Hertz Equipment Rental Corp (HERC), as well as senior rental figures from China, the conference will offer a combination of region-specific information as well as general advice on rental ‘best practice’.

United Rentals CEO Michael Kneeland shares his views on how to success through focusing on customer service, while Loxam CEO Gérard Déprez looks at the different rental models that have emerged in the developing European market.

Jay Early of HERC draws on the company’s own experience of establishing a rental business in China, while Bud Howard of Volvo Rents will look at how manufacturer led rental operations are helping lead the development of rental in new markets around the world.

Two Chinese rental entrepreneurs - Chai Zhao Yi of Shanghai Pangyuan Construction Equipment Rental and Wang Li Chun from Xuzhou G&L Construction Equipment Rental Co – offer local insight into the Chinese rental sector.

Recent additions to the programme include David Phillips, founder and owner of Off-Highway Research, who will give an overview of the global construction equipment market as well as an update on the very particular situation in today’s Chinese market.

SPEAKERS

John Bureau, general manager of Wynne Systems, has spent 25 years developing and implementing information technology solutions for the equipment rental sector. Before becoming the general manager of rental software company Wynne Systems, he held many IT-related positions for US Rentals and United Rentals. He was Director of IT at US Rentals before it merged with United Rentals, and subsequently managed the software development group and support team for United Rentals.

Chai Zhao Yi founded Shanghai Pangyuan Construction Equipment Rental in 2001, and it is now the largest rental company in China, with depots covering most of the major cities in China. Mr Chai says his company may soon establish a rental business in South East Asia and his ambition is for Pangyuan to helpm develop the rental concept in China and to become one of the rental market leaders worldwide.

Gérard Déprez has been the CEO of Loxam since 1986. In that time he has grown the business to be the largest rental company in Europe operating in 11 countries. Mr Déprez was instrumental in creating the European Rental Association and was its first president, holding that post between June 2006 and May 2013.

Jay Early is vice president for Europe, Middle East, Africa and China at Hertz Equipment Rental Corp (HERC). Jay has spent 21 years with HERC, starting as a sales coordinator and working through the ranks in a variety of roles, including field sales, branch manager and area manager.

Michael Kneeland is president and CEO of United Rentals, the world’s largest equipment rental company, and has more than 33 years experience in the equipment rental industry. He joined United as a district manager in 1998 and was appointed CEO in June 2007.

Bud Howard has more than 30 years of experience of the equipment rental market. He joined Hertz Equipment Rental Corp (HERC) in 1982, rising to become vice president of sales, and then moved to RSC Equipment Rental, where he was senior vice president of sales and marketing. He joined Volvo in 2000, initially working for Volvo Rents in North America before assuming his current role as Director Global Rental, responsible for developing the Volvo Rents business internationally.

David Phillips is managing director, founder and owner of Off-Highway Research, the London-based consultancy that specialises in the research and analysis of international construction equipment markets. Off-Highway Research has offices in London, New Delhi and Beijing, and annually provides a wide range of subscription and database services to more than 500 clients around the world.

Nick Sowden, president, Snorkel Asia & director of supply chain, Snorkel, joined the aerial platform manufacturer in March 2008 and became part of the company’s global management board in 2011. He has responsibility for enhancing the Snorkel distributor network, along with developing sales, after-market and manufacturing operations.

Wang Li Chun is the chairman and founder of Xuzhou G&L. Before setting up the company in 2002 he worked for many years at XCMG, one of the major Chinese construction equipment manufacturers. In 2010 he established Xuzhou’s equipment rental business, which now rents a wide range of construction equipment.

Tim Whiteman has been CEO of IPAF since January 2004, leading the organisation in its mission to promote the safe use of aerial work platforms worldwide. Under his stewardship the organisation has expended internationally and now has representative offices in Europe, North America, South America and Asia. Before joining IPAF Mr Whiteman worked in publishing, as a founding editor of International Cranes and Access International magazines and later as founder of Vertikal Press.

Yuan Zheng is founder and owner of Guangzhou Hailin Rental and has more than 20 years’ experience in tower crane rental in China. Guangzhou Hailin was established in 2001 and is a key player in China’s tower crane rental sector, with offices in 13 cities in South, North East, Central, and West China. He is the vice chairman of the equipment management and rental division of China Construction Industry Association (CCIA).
