CPA issues new guidance on ground conditions

02 June 2014

The UK Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) has issued new safety advice dealing with ground bearing pressures and loading from mobile equipment.

It is inviting feedback on the new guidance document, Ground Conditions for Construction Plant, which is now available as a draft for public comment.

The CPA said failure of the ground on which construction equipment stands and moves was a frequent cause of minor incidents and near misses on sites, together with a significant number of serious injuries and fatalities.

The new guidance looks at assessment and engineering of the ground’s capability to withstand loadings, and also addresses the co-ordination of duties, among other factors.

Participating organisations for the document included the UK’s Health and Safety Executive, the Environment Agency, UK Contractors Group, the UK Civil Engineering Contractors Association, the Temporary Works Forum, specialist contractor organisations, and others.

All comments must be submitted by 1 July. Return comments to [email protected] using the Comments Form downloadable off the website. For further information on the Construction Plant-hire Association, contact Kevin Minton, CPA Director on (+44) (0)20 7796 3366.
