Bauma A to Z: IRN's guide to the 2010 Bauma exhibition

From electric mini excavators and tiny telehandlers to hand-held breakers and rough terrain scissors lifts, IRN presents its 11-page Bauma Rental Guide.

If you think you've seen everything at Bauma then you need to take another look. Of course, seeing everything properly is just not impossible, unless you feel like making 428 stand visits every day for seven days. (There are 3000 exhibitors in total.)

The best you can hope for is to reach the ‘must-see' stands and new equipment, leaving yourself enough time for a more speculative wander around some of the less travelled paths.

What is ‘must-see' depends on the kind of rental company you are, but in this Bauma Rental Guide we have focused on the obvious categories: compact equipment, access and material handling, on-site equipment (including pumps, compressors and gensets), compaction tools and other sectors including formwork, hand-held tools and demolition and attachments.

It is not a completely exhaustive list of new equipment relevant to rental, but we hope to have brought together many of the most important new launches.

COMPACT & UTILITY EQUIPMENT

There will be literally hundreds of new compact machines on show in Munich. Rental people will inevitably look to the Kubota stand for new excavators, but the company is keeping very quiet about what will be on show. All it would say is that there will be two more of the new -4 series models on show. This follows the launch last year of the first -4 unit, the KX057-4.

Another firm favourite with rental companies is Takeuchi. Again, the company is being a bit tight-lipped about what compact models it will have on its stand, although confirms that there will definitely be something worth seeing. An educated guess would be that Takeuchi will be showing a more sophisticated version of the electric plug-in mini that it first showed at Intermat in 2006. The target here is for a model that doesn't need mains power but uses a self-contained battery system. Definitely worth a trip to open area F12, Booth 1212/3, where Takeuchi exhibits with its German dealer W Shafer.

Not in the compact sector, but we can say with certainty that Takeuchi will be showing its largest excavator yet - the 16 t TB1160W model. This is a size up from its previous largest model, a tracked 14 t unit, and adds to manufacturer's existing 8 t wheeled machine.

New from Hyundai are mini excavators from its long-awaited -9 series of machines in the shape of the 1.6 t R16-9, 2.7 t zero tail swing R27Z-9 and 5.5 t R55-9. There will also be a wheeled model on display, the 5.5 t R55W-9.

Of the nine new models Hitachi plans to launch at Bauma, seven will be compact excavators. At the lower end of the weight classifications will be the traditional design ZX18-3 and ZX27-3, while the new short tail-swing models are the ZX29U-3, ZX33U-3, ZX38U-3, ZX48U-3 and ZX52U-3.

The five other mini excavators being launched by Hitachi are short tail swing machines. The ZX29U-3, ZX33U-3 and ZX38U-3 are all equipped with next generation three-cylinder engines to reduce fuel consumption, while a new automatic travel speed control helps to maintain smooth handling and stability when carrying loads. The larger ZX48U-3 and ZX52U-3 short-tail machines meanwhile feature four-cylinder engines, although fuel consumption is -13% lower than their predecessors.

New additions to the Bobcat range of mini excavators include the E45 and E 50 4.5 and 5.0 t class zero tail swing mini excavators. Both are powered by a four-cylinder Kubota engine and come with an ‘auto idle' function as standard to reduce fuel consumption and noise at times of low activity.

In the compact loader segment, Bobcat will be showing the S650 skid steer and T650 tracked loaders, which offer a range of improvements over the previous models. These include greater operator comfort with a bigger cab, bigger door, adjustable joysticks and better all-round visibility.

JCB's latest addition is the 8 t 8085 ZTS, a zero tail swing excavator that is a similar size to the 8080 ZTS it replaces, but which offers more productivity and lower operating costs. Much of this is due to the new 43 kW engine that offers more torque at lower revs, while auto idle and one-touch idle functions also help to reduce fuel consumption.

Volvo will launch four new machines in its compact excavator range. These are the EC15C, EC17C, EC18C and EC20C, replacing the existing EC15B in XR, XT and XTV variants and the EC20B in XT and XTV variants. New features include hydraulic hoses routed inside the boom and simultaneous control of slew and offset movements using the electro-proportional roller. All four models are powered by a 12.3 kW diesel engine.

Case launches a high travel speed (HTS) option for three of its compact wheeled loader models. This takes the top speed for machines like the 121E from 20 km/h to 35 km/h. The addition of a mechanical high speed gear does not detract from the precise control available with the hydrostatic drive, with features like inching control retained.

New from Caterpillar is the 434E Mechanical backhoe loader. As the name suggests, the machine features mechanical operating levers as opposed to pilot controls. Caterpillar says this is a preference in developing markets such as Eastern Europe and Russia, where there is a need for high performance with simple controls.

Hidromek will unveil a compact backhoe loader in the shape of the HMK62. The machine offers a 0.35 m3 bucket at the front and a 0.05 m3 bucket at the back, and is powered by a 45 kW Honda engine.

New backhoe loaders will be a feature of the Chenggong stand, with the CG862H, CG866H and CG866HTC on display. All come with and 82 kW engine and a range of bucket options and the CG862H features a side shift digger arm. The CG866HTC meanwhile has longer loader arms and a tool carrier linkage.

New from Terex is the TA3.5SH 3.5 t capacity site dumper. A key feature is the directional drive selector on the steering column, which allows the operator to change between forward and reverse without using a manual clutch or gear lever.

Liugong's new machines include the 777III, a side-shift version of the backhoe loader it launched three years ago. Options include an extending dipper stick, and the European version features a Stage IIIA-compliant 75 kW engine, as opposed to the Stage I Weichai that can be fitted for emerging market countries.

The company will also be showing its 365A skid steer loader, which is powered by a Stage IIIA Yanmar engine.

Gehl Europe shows a selection of its AL range of seven compact articulated loaders, now available in North America (selected models) following their European launch in 2008. The range comes in sizes from 1.4 to 3.2 t operating weights and all are equipped with low noise and low emission Yanmar diesel engines.

Italy's Hinowa extends its tracked mini-dumper range with the HS1100 High Speed, a faster version of its HS1100 and HS1150 dumpers with speeds increasing from 4 km/hr to 6 km/hr. A new control system provides more power when travelling uphill and offers top speed on flat ground.

US utility equipment machinery manufacturer Vermeer adds several new products at Bauma, including a new stump cutter, brush chipper, drill and compact tractor. The SC372 stump cutter, which replaces and upgrades the SC352 model, is a compact model - only 0.89 m wide - and is powered by either a 28.2 kW Yanmar diesel or 26.1 kW Briggs & Stratton Vanguard petrol engine. The unit has new operator controls that incorporate additional safety features.

The new BC1200XL brush chipper - also available with two engine options, either a 63.4 kW or 82 kW Cummins diesel engine -fills a gap in the company's range and will also replaces the existing BC1000.

Also on show is a new mid-compact utility tractor, the RTX550. This "fills an important niche for contractors who complete secondary, short-run installations." Powered by a 48.4 kW engine, the tractor can be fitted with rubber tires or the rubber quad-track system.

Finally, Merlo finds time to expand its Cingo tool carrier range with 1.2 t and 1.6 t payload capacity models (the M12 and M16). The M12, which will replace the 1 t M10, will also be offered with 9 m and 14 m aerial platform attachments.

ACCESS/TELEHANDLERS/MATERIAL HANDLING

Merlo always likes to have something different on its stand, and this Bauma will be no exception, with interesting prototype telescoping aerial platforms mounted on a truck carrier from one of its DBM concrete mixers. The two versions will have platform heights of 15 and 18 m, both using a boom from Merlo's Roto 38.16 telehandler.

Platform capacity will be 1000 kg and weighing around 12 t they will be much simpler (and less expensive) than Merlo's previously shown MRP articulated boom platforms based on a telehandler carrier.

Also making a big impression will be UpRight Powered Access, partly because all of its equipment will be in the Snorkel colours of orange and white, which is the new global colour for all UpRight/Snorkel products.

If the UpRight blue is disappearing, then at least the company has new machines to show, and lots of them. First up will be the Pop-Up push-around scissors that UpRight now has global distribution rights to sell. Just as important, UpRight shows a completely new generation of self-propelled boom lifts, a new range of electric scissor lifts and three new twin-deck construction scissors.

JLG Industries will focus on its aftermarket service - highlighting the fact, for example, that in addition to parts for its own machines it also offers around 5000 OEM competitor parts as well.

It will show an enhanced version of its well-established E300 electric articulating boom. Improvements on the existing model include the use of new non-marking 25x7 12 in tyres to help protect floors, improve traction and provide a smoother ride, and repositioned pothole protection bars to make it easier to travel up steep ramps. Smaller more efficient batteries (305 Ahr rather than 370 Ahr) will actually offer a 20% better duty cycle.

The company has also announced recently that HSS Hire in the UK has been granted exclusive UK distribution rights for the innovative Liftpod, signaling its entry to the European market (the lift was scheduled to be shown at the International Hardware Fair in Cologne at the end of February.)

Also new will be the 2906/2906L (low height version) and 3507 compact telehandlers. These will replace the 266 and 307 models that have been available for several years, and were launched first at a major agricultural show in Europe last year.

Finally, the company will show its new ClearSky telematics solution, following its North American launch at the recent Rental Show in Orlando.

Manitou, in addition to showing several new telehandlers (see more below) is launching a higher capacity version of its 160 ATJ articulated boom. This will not replace the original model, but the 160 ATJ+ will offer customers a platform capacity increased from 230 to 400 kg and a larger 2.4 m by 0.9 m basket, allowing three people to work with tools. The chassis on the ‘+' model will be a little larger.

German truck mounted platform specialist Ruthmann promises a visual treat on its stand with at least four of its new TB 270 models arranged in an imaginative way (although it wasn't saying how). The TB 270 is a larger version of the recently launched TB 220, still mounted on a 3.5 t GVW carrier but with 5 m extra working height and 14.8 m outreach. A lightweight TBR 200 will also be on show - the first lightweight Ruthmann unit to have a fly jib at the end of the boom.

The Ruthmann stand is very much worth a visit, because if you buy a machine you will automatically enter a draw to win one of five trips to the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

Teupen shows its new ‘economy' 13GT model - with an aluminium boom - as well as an upgraded version of its Leo 23GT, with a new crawler undercarriage (extendible as an option) and new control panel. Finland's Dinolift, meanwhile, shows its 215XTC, the largest of its new range of crawler mounted ‘Spider' machines.

Terex AWP isn't planning any new aerial platform launches at the show, although it will have the recently introduced Genie GTH-4018 SR Rotating Telehandler on its stand.

Alimak Hek is launching a range of low height landing gates to meet the requirements of the new Machinery Directive. The gates, which cannot be opened unintentionally and have a kick plate to prevent items from falling, are designed to fit all types of applications and will weigh less than 25 kg. They are also compatible with all brands of construction hoists, material hoists and transport platforms.

Alimak Hek will also show a larger version of its Scando 650 heavy duty hoists. The Scando 650 FC-XL extra large hoist cars have internal cage lengths of up to 5 m, 2 m width and heights up to 2.8 m Alimak Hek believes it is the largest standard construction hoists on the world market operating on a single mast.

Hinowa is updating its Lightlift range of Spider platforms, with the addition of automatic self-levelling and retraction of outriggers on the 14.72, 19.65 and 23.12 models. These models - designated IIIS (Self Stabilisation System) - will also now use CAN-BUS controls, incorporating a remote control diagnostic display.

The company launched the first Lithium-Ion battery powered aerial platform last year, the Goldlift 14.70, and says that Li-Ion battery systems will also soon be available with the 19.65 and 23.12 models.

Hinowa is also adding a new Goldlift model, the 17.80 XL, which is a larger version of the 14.70 and fills a gap between it and the Lightlift 1965. This is a fully hydraulic model and it will also feature lubrication-free pins.

The Italian company also promises a new version of the Orchidea Lift 21.11 truck mount introduced at Intermat last year. This version will have a one-button ‘go home' feature and variable outrigger settings.

Under its new leadership, Manitou is intent on streamlining its product range and reducing the number of ‘non-standard' models. This new approach will be evident at Bauma, with two new simplified MRT models on show - 16 and 18 m models. These will have a new cab design, modified outriggers (to reduce the dimensions and make set-up easier) and improved lifting capacities.

The trend towards compact telehandlers will also be evident, with Manitou launching the MT625, a 2.5 t capacity, 5.85 m lift height model designed for the construction model. The unit will feature a laterally mounted 55 kW Kubota engine and a two-speed hydrostatic transmission. This machine will replace the existing Manitou 2.3 t/5.0 m compact model.

Also on the cards at Bauma is news on attachments, with Manitou set to use the existing attachments from its US subsidiary Gehl and its Italian business to market a new range of Manitou attachments.

As well as launching new aerial platforms, Italy's Merlo will show a new 5 t, 18 m telehandler based on the chassis of a 10 t handler. This machine, which was developed first for the Canadian market, will be extremely stable by virtue of its heavy duty carrier and will find favour in areas such as North America, Scandinavia and the Middle East.

Also on show will be a prototype of Merlo's largest Roto model yet, the Roto 60.24 MCSS with a maximum lift height of 24 m and maximum capacity of 6000 kg.

Wacker Neuson subsidiary Kramer Werke's two new telehandlers, the 1245 and 2506, are compact models to add to the existing 3307, 4507 and 4009 machines. The 1245 mini-handler can lift up to 1.2 t and has a maximum lifting height of 4.5 m, but is just 2.92 m long and 1.56 m wide. The 2506, meanwhile, is also narrow at 1.94 m, but offers lifting heights of 5.75 m and maximum payload of 2.5 t. "We now have an extremely attractive model range of offer", says Kramer product manager Andreas Breunig.

As far as telehandlers are concerned, Bobcat has a new four-model range of rotary machines covering lift capacities from 3.5 to 5.0 t and lift heights from 17.5 m to 24.5 m.

In addition to its earthmoving equipment and cranes, Liebherr will also show two updated telehandlers at Bauma. Both the TL435-10 and TL445-10 models are receiving an upgrade - details to be announced at Bauma.

New from JCB is the 515-40 Loadall, which at just 1.8 m high, 2.97 m long and weighing less than 3.5 t is the smallest telehandler JCB has ever built. Despite it's small size, the machine can take a 1.5 t payload to a height of 4 m, and it also has 4-wheel drive and steering for excellent maneuverability. The machine can be specified with either a compact Loadall or skid steer quick hitch.

Chinese crane giant XCMG meanwhile will launch its first ever telehandlers at Bauma. Details are sketchy, but the company says it will have 14 m and 17 m working height machines on display, both of which will be powered by Cummins engines and feature 4x4 drive.

German material handling specialist Bocker uses Bauma to expand its range of rack and pinion hoists, launching its first ever mast climbing platform, the Maxi-Climber MC 650. The single mast version has a maximum platform length of 15 m and a maximum carrying capacity of 3.5 t, while the twin-mast unit can be up to 35 m long and carry as much as 6 t. The mast climber uses the same mast sections as on the company's Giant-Lift and Superlift LX construction hoists, as well as some of the same components from the hoist cages.

In the company's inclined ladder lift and crane segment, there is a new compact inclined ladder lift, the Junior HD 24K, featuring an articulating joint at the upper end of the ladder, the first of the Junior series to have that feature. The trailer mounted model has a maximum lifting height of approximately 24 m, has an average lifting speed of 45 m/min and can lift loads of up to 250 kg.

The company also plans to show an entirely new wireless control system for its range of construction hoists - details of the system will be available at Bauma.

In the forklift sector, German manufacturer Jungheinrich will show the new VFG 316s - 320s trucks, hydrostatic drive counterbalance models in the smallest size class from 1.6 to 2.0 t lifting sizes. Replacing existing models, the new trucks are available in diesel or LPG versions, using a Volkswagen engine.

Mitsubishi Equipment Europe will have on show its Japanese developed hybrid powered forklift truck. This 4.0-5.0 t rated truck is already available in Japan, but will be shown at Bauma not so much to promote the truck but to show manufacturers the hybrid power system. By using a power train comprising a lithium ion battery, diesel engine, two induction motors and inverters, the company has been able to reduce by a third the size of diesel engine required.

Mitsubishi says it will market this hybrid power system to OEMs who will benefit from using smaller diesel engines and in some cases reduce the size of the engine such that expensive aftertreatment for emissions reduction is not required. Manufacturers of excavators and aerial platforms are among its target customers.

ON-SITE EQUIPMENT

Doosan Infracore Portable Power (DIPP) launches the new 12/150 compressor, its largest single axle portable compressor. The 12/150 has a free air delivery of 14.9 m³/min (526 cfm) at an output pressure of 12 bar and is intended for applications in rental, construction, quarrying and general industry.

Also new from DIPP is the AGC200 synchronization option for the company's G250, G400 and G500 PowerSource generators. DIPP says it has worked with DEIF, the generator controls specialist, to develop the synchronization feature, which Doosan says will "allow specialist generator rental companies to manage and optimize generator fleet modularity and thereby increase utilization rates."

Finally, the company launches a new version of its 7/41 portable compressor, with a new "Tough Top" polymer canopy. The canopy can be supplied in customer colours and retrofitted to existing 7/41 units.

New compressors from Atlas Copco include the XAS 87 kD, which provides 5m3/min at 7 bar. The trailer-mounted unit weighs in at 750 kg and has been designed with the needs of the European rental market in mind. Robustly constructed and simple to operate, the compact and lightweight design also means there are no special licensing requirements to tow it behind a vehicle.

Also new is the XAHS 237, offering 236 l/sec at 12 bar and the XAMS 287, providing 285 l/sec at 8.6 bar. As part of an introductory offer, Atlas Copco is offering these with FuelXpert and an after cooler/water separator as part of the standard package.

Bauma is where Atlas Copco starts to really push its Chicago Pneumatic brand in Europe. Having already rebranded its Irmair compressors as Chicago Pneumatic in Europe, the company will use Bauma to show a wide range of gensets and compressors as well as a selection of handheld tools and breakers and light concreting and compaction equipment.

Notable product launches will include the new CPS 7.5 compressor, produced in Belgium, and a lighter version (by 250 kg) of the Chicago Pneumatic 275. The unit, which uses a Deutz engine, delivers 7.6 m³/min (269 cfm) at 7 bar (102 psi) working pressure, and is designed for abrasive sandblasting, running pneumatic tools and general construction work.

In the company's generator range, expect to see new 40 and 60 kVA models, although no details were available at the time of going to press.

At Bauma 2010, CompAir will launch its new, fuel-efficient range of three high-pressure portable compressors, designed to deliver up to 26% energy savings. See the Compressor feature in this issue for further details.

Germany's Kaeser will show, among other models, its Mobilair 43, the latest of its portable compressors to be offered with the new double-walled polyethylene canopy. The standard metal canopied version will also still be available. Powered by a four cylinder water-cooled Kubota turbo diesel engine, the Mobilair 43 provides free air delivery of 4.2m³/min at 7 bar.

In the pump sector, Sweden's Grindex adds a new 80 m head submersible drainage pump to its Master range. The new double-stage Master SH pump weighs less than 100 kg, making it an extremely compact high-head pump. (In comparison, Grindex's 200 m head pump weighs 1 t.) Designed for applications in underground mines, open pit mines, quarries and tunnels, the Master SH is designed to be resistant to abrasives in the water, with damaging material kept away from vulnerable parts.

Bauma will see couple of new self-priming and submersible pumps from ITT Water & Wastewater. Centre stage will be a new range of diesel-driven self-priming pumps, the first Flygt diesel pumps to use the company's patented N pump hydraulic technology.

On show at Bauma will be the 6 in version of the new range, with 4 in and 8 in models to follow later this year and 10 in and 12 in units planned for 2011. The 6 in unit will have a maximum flow rate of 92 l/sec and have a maximum head of 49 m.

Also new will be the first two-stage Flygt pump in the 2600 series. The 10 kW rated 2660 ST uses ITT's Active Seal system to lengthen intervals between oil changes and maintenance checks.

Pioneer Pumps, which can be found on the UK pavilion, will show its new PP100 pumpset, which offers flows of more than 200 m3/h and pressures of 3 bar. The unit can handle solids of up to 76 mm and is powered by a Cat engine.

Also on show will be the PP150 pumpset, which offers flows of up to 400 m3/hour at 3 bar. Again, a Cat engine supplies the power, and the maximum solid size is 76 mm.

The new PX80S high pressure pump, meanwhile, can deliver 120 m3/hour at pressures of more than 20 bar. Powered by a JCB engine, the unit is designed for dewatering and drilling applications.

Tsurumi Europe promises an "exciting package of product launches" at Bauma, chief among them the new NK 2-22 dewatering pump and the launch of an innovative excavator adaptor.

The NK 2-22 is a heavy duty, high head, single-phase submersible pump with applications including the removal of sand, wastewater and general construction site drainage. It has a 2.2 kW motor and can carry water over a total head of 25 m or reach flow capacities of up to 590 l/min.

Tsurumi's new excavator adaptor transforms a standard excavator into a mobile pumping unit. The adaptor on show at Bauma is designed to improve efficiency when pumping sand, mud or slurry with Tsurumi's GPN series.

US/UK pump manufacturer and rental company Godwin Pumps celebrates the 40th anniversary of the very first Dri-Prime pump by launching two additions to the range. The HL260M is a 250 mm by 200 mm single-stage automatic priming centrifugal pump capable of flow rates to 910 m3/h and pumping heads of up to 183 m. Ideal for mining a quarry applications, the pump has a considerably higher flow volume than the other high-head pump in the range, the HL160.

The other new Dri-Prime is the CD500M, a 600 x 400 mm centrifugal pump capable of flow rates to 3066 m3/h and heads of 61 m. This is designed for large dewatering applications in mining and civil construction, and is a higher flow version of the CD400.

Although best known for its Dri-Prime models, Godwin also markets a range of submersible pumps. At Bauma the company will launch the next generation of these Sub-Prime pumps, which will be available in sludge, trash and dewatering versions from 0.4 to 67 kW. Godwin promises "significant advancements" on the existing range.

Wacker Neuson is expanding its pump range with additional PS submersible pumps, although there are no advance details available.

UK company Brendon Powerwashers launches its first hot water pressure washers - the company has previously focused on cold water models. On show will be the top of the range HWBBW50KP unit, equipped with a larger pump than the three other models in the range. Maximum water pressures are 340 bar and flow rates are up to 12.5 l/min.

Brendon says the washers use a diesel fired water plate heat exchanger to heat the water. This system, for which a patent is being sought, uses fewer parts than a traditional water boiler and is easily removable as a single unit from the rear of the unit. The washers are ideal for removing graffiti and other heavy duty tasks, and will be around 40% more expensive than cold water units.

Available either skid- or trailer mounted, the washers weigh 1500 kg and can be powered by a choice of one Yanmar diesel or three Honda petrol engines.

Expect a big showing from one of the giants of German construction equipment manufacturing, Putzmeister, with new concrete pumps of all shapes and sizes as well as innovations in some of its less well known product ranges, like high pressure washers.

New compact equipment will include the Mixokret M 700 E electric screed, the smallest and lightest Mixokret yet. The new P 718 concrete pump is designed for fine concrete, typically for liquid screed but also capable of pumping concrete with grain sizes up to 32 mm. Another innovation is the SP 11 BUR plastering machine, the new top of the range model in the Beliso worm pump range with a new 4 cylinder engine.

In the high pressure cleaning range, Putzmeister launches the Dynajet 800 me, a compact electric trolley unit with 800 bar delivery pressure, making it "the world's most powerful high-pressure cleaner in its class."

Sokkia and Topcon - part of the same company following the merger in early 2008 - will exhibit at Bauma on the same stand, although the two distinct brands remain firmly in place.

New Sokkia product at Bauma will include the company's new GPS receiver, the GRX1 GNSS that will replace the 2700ISX and 1700CSX models. The receiver, which has an integrated antenna, digital UHF radio, GSM module, Bluetooth module and detachable battery, will be available with two data collectors, the SHC250 ‘economy' model and the full-specification SHC2500.

For the construction market Sokkia will also show the new Triax MP500 multi-purpose laser. This is a replacement for the MP400 and EL400 units, and is built for Sokkia as part of an OEM partnership.

COMPACTION

Following its acquisition of Antec last summer, Ammann will show pavers for the first time. The smallest, the APW 1500 mini-paver has an operating weight of 790 kg, a production capacity of 35 t/hr and a paving width of between 0.8 m and 1. Other new pavers will also be on show.

Ammann launches two vibratory rammers in the shape of the ACR60 and ACR68. Both models are powered by Honda GX 100 four-stroke petrol engines with an output of 2.2 KW at 4300 rpm. Fitted with a 3.2 l fuel tank for extended use, both rammers benefit from excellent stability as a result of a low centre of gravity.

The company also continues to develop its Rammax trench roller range and will unveil its Rammax 2500 in Munich. Replacing the RW 2000 and RW 2900, the 2500 weighs 2500 kg and has a working width of either 1 m or 1.2 m.

Also new in Munich will be the AP240-2 H hybrid hydrostatic rubber-tyre roller. With operating weights of between 9.5 t and 24 t, the eight wheel roller has a working width of 2 m and features a gentle start and stop function to prevent making ripples in the asphalt.

Ammann will debut its 11.7 t AV120X articulated tandem roller at the show, and in so doing will complete its heavyweight range. The company's final new product is the ASC170 single drum roller with a working width of 2.1 m and a weight of 17.8 t.

New in the Bomag's light equipment range is the BMP8500 multipurpose articulated compactor. Featuring wireless remote control, a dual exciter system with directed vibrator, IVC and Ecomode, the BMP8500 has optional drum extensions that can extend the working width up to 0.85 m.

Bomag will launch two new petrol engine tampers in the shape of the BT60/4 and the BT65/4. Both models feature a two-section cover on the steering bow and a dual filter fuel system to ensure engine reliability and durability. Alongside the tampers, Bomag will unveil its BP and BVP single direction compaction plates. The BP range has been designed for specialist users who demand power and versatility, while the BVP range features two models fitted with Honda petrol engines. Thanks to a folding steering bow, the BVP range is ideally suited to hire applications.

Also new in Munich will be Bomag's BW174AP-4, a 9.2 t pivot-steered tandem roller. Essentially a fourth generation model, the BW174AP-4 has a new ergonomic cab and operating controls. Equipped with Ecomode active engine management, the BW174AP-4 achieves fuel savings of 20% over the previous model. A field test hybrid drive version, the BW174AP AM, will also be shown.

Among six new lightweight tandem rollers with operating weights of between 1.4 and 1.6 tonnes will be the BW100ACM, the BW90 SC-5 and the BW100 SC-5. All rollers in the light series are equipped with Bomag's exciter system, high performance hydraulics and intelligent vibration control (IVC) to automatically prevent stationary vibration or compaction at excessive speeds.

Dynapac, part of the Atlas Copco group and exhibiting on the same stand as its parent, will have several new compaction and paver products on show.

The 400 kg class LG400 forward and reverse plate compactor fills a gap in the range, and has a new bottom plate design that helps stop the plate from getting stuck. The PL 600T and PL 1000T are new wheeled compact planers, adding to the PL 500 model launched a year ago. These have 600 mm and 1000 mm cutting widths, respectively.

Also new is a range of pneumatic tyred rollers. The CP224, CP224W and CP274 models have compacting widths ranging from 1800 to 2300 mm and maximum operating weights from 21 to 27 t. These rollers have a spacious cab with a rotating and sideways sliding seat and steering assembly.

For asphalt work, the company will launch the Compactasphalt 2500, which will place two layers of asphalt in a single pass.

On the massive 9000 m2 Wirtgen Group stand, subsidiary Hamm will be a big attraction for compaction equipment buyers, and there will be plenty new to see. Hamm continues the roll-out of its HD+ range of articulating tandem rollers, with new mid-range 9 and 11 t class models joining the 12 and 14 t units launched in 2008. The HD+ 90 and HD+ 110 machines are "all-rounders" suited to motorway construction or other large spaces.

The company is also updating its 10 model range of CompactLine articulated tandem rollers in the 1.5 to 4.0 t sizes. The drive train is new, with Kubota engines replacing Hatz, increasing the power on all models with drum width of more than 1 m - 15% more in the case of the HD 13 and HD 14 models.

One notable innovation is the new GRW280 rubber tyred roller, a single model that will replace the existing range from the GRW 10 up to the GRW 24. The key feature here is a flexible ballasting system that allows an end user, or rental company, to vary the weight of the machines from 10 t up to 28 t using steel or concrete ballast.

Germany's Weber MT uses Bauma to introduce two new single direction vibratory plates, the CF 2 and CF 3, and the new SRV 620 tamper. The CF 2 has a centrifugal force of 15 kN and CF 3 provides 20 kN. Weber says the plates distinguish themselves by offering a high degree of operator comfort ( the hand/arm vibrations have been considerably reduced through a new guide-bar) and smaller overall dimensions and a folding guide-bar mean that they can be easily transported in a car.

The "rugged and powerful" SRV 620 tamper has been equipped with an innovative air filtration system, says Weber, which means that compared to its predecessor, there is a considerably higher filter output, meaning an extended service life for the engine.

Liugong's stand will feature the 12 t class CLG612HIII vibratory single drum compactor. The hydrostatic drive offers infinitely variable speeds up to 12 km/h and power comes from a Stage IIIA-compliant 116 kW Cummins engine.

Fellow Chinese manufacturer Tian Gong will also display a 12 t class machine in the shape of its YZ12G. The unit offers a choice of two frequencies and amplitudes, and also has a hydraulic drive. Components include a 110 kW Cummins engine, Eaton drive lines and Rexroth hydraulics.

Wacker Neuson, meanwhile, says its new DPU 130 vibratory plate offers the same compacting power as a 7 t roller. A key feature of the remote controlled unit is the use of two ground plates that make it more maneuverable.

Also in the compaction sector the company unveils a new range of WP-series vibratory plates up to 105 kg. Wacker Neuson says the new design of base plate means that compaction performance is good along edges and "without damaging hot asphalt surfaces when they are turned quickly."

Chicago Pneumatic, which is now selling differentiated products manufactured by sister companies in Atlas Copco, including compaction specialist Dynapac, is introducing new ranges of tampers, forward/reverse plate compactors and forward soil and asphalt plates, plus a duplex roller.

On show will be the Chicago Pneumatic MS690, a Honda-powered, 67 kg tamper; the 400 kg class MV480 forward/reverse plate; the MV84 forward soil and asphalt plate; and the MR700 duplex roller.

HAND HELD TOOLS

On the hand-held side, Atlas Copco will introduce a new generation of vibro-reduced handheld hydraulic breakers. Four models make up the new range, the 23 kg LH 190 E, the 26.5 kg LH 230 E, the 29.5 kg LH 280 E and the 37 kg LH 400 E. The company says that it has improved the vibration characteristics by suspending the heavy weight handle in a dampened pivot pin, decreasing the vibration emissions.

A new range of power cutters from Husqvarna - the K760, K970 and K1260 - all come with an improved active air filter that means the cutters can work for a year before the filters need removed. The new cutters will also use Husqvarna's X-Torq engines that reduce hydrocarbon emissions and use 20% less fuel than conventional 2-stroke engines.

The company will also show a complete range of the recently launched Diagrip diamond tool technology, including wall and floor saw blades, drill bits and blades for handheld power cutters.

Wacker Neuson is adding the EH 25 electric breaker, a model that has vibration levels below 5 m/s2, allowing a worker to use it for an entire 8 hour shift.

Also new are the BTS 630 and BTS 6354 cut off saws, replacing Wacker's existing models. These will feature a new air filter concept that will reduce maintenance requirements and downtime.

Danish hydraulic tool specialist Hycon will show at Bauma its new small powerpack and 15 kg breaker combination that it hopes will compete head on with electric breakers. The HPP06 power pack is powered by a 6.5 hp Honda engine and the 15 kg HH15 breaker closes the gap between Hycon's existing 10 kg and 22 kg breakers.
The powerpack weighs 54 kg and can also be used with Hycon's HH10 and HH20 breakers, a core drill and 14 in cut-off saw.
Chicago Pneumatic launches the CP 0112, CP 0112 S and CP 0112 EX handheld pneumatic breakers, the lightest in the company's range. These offer a 15% increase in performance compared to the previous CP 0111 series. The improved performance comes courtesy of an upgraded valve system.

Not strictly speaking hand-held, but still light-duty, is E-Z Drill's new 240B ‘combo' drill for straight-line drilling on a level subgrade. Similar to the Model 210B, but with the added capability of converting to a core drill. The pneumatic unit has three speeds and can drill diameters of up to 64 mm to a depth of 460 mm.

ATTACHMENTS & DEMOLITION

Doosan will use the show to unveil its new range of DXB Breakers. The five model range will cover carrier weights from 4 to 37 t. Features include a patented valve system to recover energy and increase overall performance, as well as systems to guard against blank firing and pressure peaks.

Sister company Montabert will be introducing its blue line of breakers, with the 1.7 t XL1700 being shown at Bauma. The range is designed to offer ‘entry level' units, but they still feature systems such as blank firing protection and automatic blow frequency adjustment. The company will also be launching a range of four crusher buckets for 10 to 35 t+ excavators.

Bobcat will be launching a range of new attachments, including four new skeleton buckets for its excavators, loaders and smallest telehandler. In addition there will be two new heavy duty grader attachments for its large frame loaders, along with two new lasers for either single or dual slope work. Meanwhile the TR05 is a tilt-rotator quick-hitch attachment for its E32 and E35 mini excavators. The unit works with Bobcat's ‘plug & play' attachment control device.

Sandvik's latest breakers are at the light end of the range, with the new BR111, BR222 and BR333 designed for use with 0.8 to 4.0 t carriers. Sturdiness and reliability are key features of the units, which are designed to accept a wide range of oil flows, making them suitable for mini excavators skid steer loaders and other compact carriers.

Case will be unveiling a variety of new powered attachments at Bauma. Among these will be the CB90S silenced breaker for 4 to 9 t excavators, which features a large diameter tool. Also on show will be a new scoop bucket designed for use with the Case coupler system.

New attachments from Atlas Copco include the 630 kg CC 650, which replaces the CC 550. The unit is designed for use with 6 to 12 t excavators, and features 360° rotation for quick and easy positioning. The combi cutter weighs in at 630 kg and offers a cutting force of 45 t.

MB crusher will unveil its universal quick coupling to more efficiently connect its crushing bucket range to carrier excavators. Through reducing the distance between the excavator arm and the crusher bucket the company reports improved geometry which leads to less strain on the excavator. This is enhanced further through the 50% weight reduction found in the MB coupling, down to 80 kg.

Atlas Copco will be introducing a number of new products, including the new 3 t HB 3100 heavy breaker that features PowerAdapt, which shuts down the hydraulic breaker in case the oil pressure is too high. The HB 3100 is intended for use on carriers weighing between 32 to 52 t and it operates at 160 to 180 bar and offers a blow rate from 280 to 560 bpm.

Husqvarna extends its demolition robot range with a third model, the DXR 140, which will be the smallest yet. The DXR 310 was launched last year and the mid-sized DXR 250 was launched at the start of this year.

FORMWORK

Doka will unveil its Staxo 40 load bearing tower framework scaffolding for shoring applications. Based on an ‘H shaped' frame geometry, the system expands to allow work-deck levels to extend beyond the scaffold and therefore beneath cantilevering superstructures.

Doka will also launch its heavy duty wall formwork FF100 tec, which has been designed to enable quick forming of fair-faced concrete walls. High load capacity components lead to a +33% reduction in form-ties and walls up to 3.6 m high can be constructed in a single pour.

Also from Doka will be the new DoKart for repositioning tableforms on the same level. The compact DoKart shifting trolley only requires one-man operation and manoeuvrability is enhanced through its ability to move 900 sideways and turn on its centreline.

Debuting a number of new formwork panel sizes at Bauma is MEVA. In its heavy duty Mammut wall formwork range, the company will unveil a new 3 m tall panel with a 100 kN/m2 load capacity. Suited to the construction of very high and large structures and fast pours with flowing and self compacting concretes, the Mammut 350 wall formwork features Meva's all-plastic, wood-free facing as well as a joint system and symmetrical tie holes for a quality concrete finish.

In its AluFix range, Meva will show its new range-topping 3 m tall panel designed to complete the series that already features 1.3 m and 2.6 m tall panels.

Paschal will debut its E-Deck panel slab formwork developed for ceiling thicknesses of up to 300 mm. Manufactured from steel to suit the demands of emerging markets, E-Deck panels are ideal for construction projects where crane availability is limited and where aluminium solutions are unwelcome.

New from Peri are the PEP Ergo steel tube props, designed with a high load-bearing capacity and low individual weight. Directional lowering cams in connection with a re-designed thread ease and smooth the lowering process even under load.

Following the launch of Peri Maximo at the last Bauma, Peri will use this year's exhibition to show new extended 3.3 m tall panels and upgraded corner sections. The company will also debut its MXP platform, a pre-assembled system which can be quickly erected.

Another launch at Bauma will be Peri's light protection screen (LPS), a new lightweight enclosure unit for irregular facades developed for the Asian market.

ENGINES/COMPONENTS

Cummins will show four new Stage IIIB compliant engines to complete its post 2011 range. For compact equipment, the company will launch its QSB3,3 and QSB 4,5 engines, while for heavy duty applications it will unveil its QSX 11,9 and QSX 15 engines.

Deutz will show its complete range of engines covering between 28 kW and 520 kW as well as its Dvert modular external exhaust gas after treatment technologies covering both diesel particulate filters (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

While much of the range has already been seen, the company will show its new TCD 20XX ultra compact four cylinder 2.9 litre engine for the first time in Munich. Developed specifically for the construction industry, the new engine with its provisional model designation has been designed so as not to exceed the 56 kW threshold, a critical cut off point in emissions legislation.

Mitsubishi Equipment Europe will be one of several engine producers showing off Tier 4/Stage IV engines, although in Mitsubishi's case it is for engines rated below 74 kW. The company has developed two power units - the K38 and K39 - for Tier 4 compliance, featuring the company's Urea SCR (selective catalytic reduction) aftertreatment system. These can already be supplied at Tier 3 engines, but will be the same size as the Tier 4 versions, meaning that equipment manufacturers will not need to redesign their platforms for the Tier 4 versions.

Kubota will debut its 2.6 l V2607diesel engine at Bauma. Available in a 30 kW format with normal aspiration or a 53 kW turbocharged version, the four cylinder engine features four valve per cylinder technology and electrically controlled fuel injection, the combination of which means the engine attains Stage IIIB compliance.

Debuting its new Stage IIIB compliant 854 series is Perkins. The compact, four cylinder, 3,4 l engines produce between 45 kW and 86 kW. Designed to offer greater power density from more compact physical dimensions, the range-topping 854E features common rail fuel injection, a turbocharger featuring a smart waste-gate, an after cooler and electronic controls to ensure both performance and reduced fuel consumption.

Volvo Penta will show its complete 16 strong line of Stage IIIB compliant industrial engines featuring turbocharging, air-to-air cooling and selective catalytic reduction, and Yanmar will unveil its Stage IIIB compliant engine line. On show at Bauma will be the 35.5 kW 4TNV88-CR and the 88.4 kW 4TNV94HT-CR engines, featuring common rail fuel injection, cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and electronic controls to govern combustion.

Transmissions specialist ZF will unveil its Ergopower hybrid and its cPower and HC85 continuously variable construction machinery transmissions in Munich. Dana, meanwhile, will debut its optimised drivetrain solution for 16 t front-end loaders with a system that includes a Spicer 319 summing motor, two Spicer 114 planetary drive axles with limited slip differential locks and a Spicer compact series 2035 driveshaft.

Heavy earthmoving

In the larger earthmoving equipment sector many manufacturers will be waiting until next year and the Stage IIIB/Tier 3 engine emission requirements to renew their ranges. Even so, Bauma will see many dozens of new large machines - including Hyundai's all-new -9 series of mini and full sized tracked and wheeled excavators up to 52 t.

IPAF's ‘safety experience'

Taking 800 m2 in the outside area, aerial platform association the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) promises to give visitors an ‘IPAF Safety Experience'; a walk-through presentation on how to use powered access equipment safely and effectively. There will be 15-20 machines on the stand, and some demonstrated as part of the ‘experience'.

IPAF will also have advance details of an ‘intelligent' PAL card that is being jointly developed by IPAF and German IT specialist Rosler. In addition the association will announce the results of its competition to find the best designed safety harness for women.

Rental at Bauma

Two big names of the German rental sector - HKL Baumaschinen and MVS Zeppelin - will both be exhibiting at Bauma.

In HKL's case, the company says it will be providing visitors with guidance on the benefits of rental as well as highlighting its growing depot network in Germany and its expanding fleet. The company says it will advise customers on new machines being launched at Bauma that may be available soon in the HKL fleet. The company exhibits between Hall B6 and B6.3/Atrium.

Exhibiting with parent company Zeppelin, rental company MVS Zeppelin will use the show to demonstrate the breadth of its product range.

In addition to the company's core earthmoving and construction machinery range, it will promote new additions to the fleet, including traffic control and road safety equipment, a trailer mounted water bowser developed with manufacturer Schmidt, new Endress 12 kVA hand-carried generators, and the compact Leonardo aerial platform from Italian manufacturer Braviisol.
