A-Plant is equipping its delivery drivers with hand-held Motorola computers that enable them to document deliveries, collections and service calls.

A-Plant has invested in 270 hand-held computers for delivery drivers that are helping the company demonstrate to major customers that it is meeting agreed levels of service.

The Motorola MC70 hand-helds, which are installed with mobile logistics software from UK company Codegate, are being used at 27 of A-Plant's service centres throughout the UK.

The device allows A-Plant's drivers to complete vehicle checks, ensure compliance with government guidelines on health and safety requirements, and document equipment deliveries, collections and service calls.

Andy Wortley, A-Plant's IT director, said; "Codegate's software combined with the MC70 allows our users to carry out barcode scanning, image capture, electronic signature capture via sign on glass capability, and real-time data communications from the field back to A-Plant's back office systems via GRPS.

"The combined capability of the mobility solution enables us to prove key performance indicators and meet the reporting procedures demanded by our key account customers. We are able to demonstrate that we are meeting service level agreements through accurate reporting on job type, the date and time it was completed, with electronic signature capture as proof of delivery or job completion."

The device will also allow drivers to take photos to provide picture evidence of damage caused to its equipment.

Mr Wortley said that Codegate had tailored the Motorola solution to A-Plant's particular needs, keeping to a minimum the amount of data input necessary and making it easy for staff to use.

A-Plant is looking at expanding the use of the Motorola units into other areas of the business, such as its workshops.

Separately, A-Plant is still planning to equip many of its sales and management staff with iPhones featuring a rental management software application developed by its sister company in the US, Sunbelt Rentals.
