HS2 reveals updated Euston Station design

HS2 has revealed the updated design for Britain’s new high speed railway terminus station at London Euston. 

Two brand-new images, updates from those issued in 2015, show the concept design for the exterior and interior of the station.

Located between Coburg Street to the west and the existing Euston Station to the east, the new railway terminus will be set across three levels and will comprise ten 45m-long platform. 

At peak operation these platforms will accommodate up to 17 high-speed trains an hour, connecting destinations in the Midlands and the North with London. 

It will also integrate internal entrances to both Euston’s Network Rail Station and London Underground Station. 

The defining feature of the new railway terminal will be a geometric roof that will  flood natural light into the station concourse. 

Made from prefabricated sections, the roof will be manufactured off site and installed using modular construction techniques to reduce costs, carbon emissions and local disruption.

It will also include a station hall that will be 20% larger than Trafalgar Square – making it the largest station concourse in the UK, as well as retail facilities and external exits will open out onto new public spaces to its north and south sides. 

“The station design will encourage walking and cycling as part of a sustainable transport strategy, providing new cycle routes and 2,000 cycle parking spaces to encourage a safe and active travel environment”, said HS2 Ltd, which will be attending this month’s Futureworx event in Peterborough.

The new designs were developed by the project’s design consortium, which is made up of Arup, WSP and Grimshaw Architects.

They are “based on a less complex, more efficient, ten-platform station which can now be built in a single stage” to minius disruption, said HS2.

Construction of the terminus will be carried out by joint venture contractor Mace Dragados (MDJV), which recently launched a multi-year procurement package worth £500 million for works to the HS2 station, London Underground at Euston and Euston Square.

Laurence Whitbourn, Euston Area Client Director at HS2 Ltd, said, “HS2’s London Euston station is one of the most complex parts of the HS2 route, situated in a densely populated residential area and adjacent to a busy operational railway.

“HS2 Ltd is absolutely committed to getting Euston right, engaging with the local community and stakeholders as we continue to progress our designs.”

Described as one of the largest transport-led regeneration projects of the century, construction of the new HS2 station also aims to create new homes, green public space and thousands of jobs, with 3,000 jobs expected to be created during construction phase alone.

Andrew Stephenson, Government Minister for HS2, said, “The arrival of HS2 at Euston provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to create an iconic destination in the area, that will help us build back better by growing not just the economy of London but that of the UK.

“This station will not only benefit the local community by enabling the comprehensive redevelopment of the area but will serve as a transport super hub acting as a gateway to the Midlands and the North – enabling us to deliver better railways across the nation sooner than under previous plans.”
