The Netherlands-based heavy transport and access rental company Peinemann purchased a Genie SX-180 boom to support lifting, drilling and subsea specialist Huisman at its Rotterdam shipyards.

Petrochemical and shipyard applications involve performing specialized tasks at extreme heights in tough conditions and the 56.85 m working height and 24.4 m outreach of the SX-180 fitted the bill.

Since the machine’s delivery, it has operated inside the workshop of the Huisman facility for the maintenance of its 57 m overhead port cranes. The 2.59 m chassis width of the machine means it can easily work among the forklifts darting about carrying materials between high stacks of containers waiting to be repaired. Outside in the yard, it will soon be used for vessel painting and cleaning, and pipe lay testing applications.

To comply with the strict safety specifications of the shipyard sector, the SX-180 unit was specially equipped with an overhead protective alarm (OPA) - an optional operator safety system that, in the case of contact with an overhead obstacle, automatically interrupts boom functions and activates an audible alarm and flashing light to alert bystanders of a potential problem. To protect the machine’s bodywork Peinemann also opted for the Genie NanoClear+ paint coating. The Trackunit Track and Trace Fleet Management Module is another features that comes as standard.

A 7.5 kW on-board generator, an AC power-to-platform and a welder-ready package, all required by Huisman, are also standard.

“For the moment, we have a lot of work lined-up in our workshop,” says Mr Wil van Boxtel, site manager, Huisman. “
