Flyover collapse

18 March 2008

At least 15 people were killed when part of a flyover under construction collapsed in Hyderabad, India on 9 September, according to local reports. Several vehicles and bicycles were trapped under the rubble from 10-tonne blocks of pre-cast concrete, which came down around 5.30 pm.

Heavy rain earlier in the day was blamed for the collapse. The two-hour downpour is thought to have caused the flyover's scaffgolding to slip, bringing down the 7.5 m by 3 m slabs.

Construction of the 1.5 km flyover will connect the exclusive Banjara Hills district with the busy Punjagutta junction and shopping district. Construction started in September 2005 but was delayed for almost a year due to changes to the route. Completion was scheduled for December.
