Construction warned over ending of 3G
25 January 2022
With most major mobile carries beginning to shut down 3G networks from February 2022, construction fleets that still operate using this technology have been warned that they need to address this situation urgently.
From February, cellular networks are ‘sunsetting’ their 3G services – this means that communication devices using 3G will not work, so fleets using the legacy network will need to upgrade their devices.
Technology company HCSS Telematics says that demand for 4G telematics devices has been increasing due to this as firms seek to avoid having software that will not work, but there are still fleets using the technology that will soon be obsolete.
“According to Transport Dive, there are still an estimated 10 to 20% of fleets operating on 3G devices that need to transition to 4G before the 3G sunset, or their business will get left behind,” said Phillip Robinson, technical product manager, HCSS.
HCSS Telematics says that it integrates with more original equipment manufacturer (OEM) GPS systems than its competitors, giving companies over 13 OEM GPS options to choose from.
